#003 — Into the Zone

New records from the week, nights still ahead across Europe, four picks that sink deeper with every track, Northern Electronics in focus and a deep cut like a dream half remembered.

This issue goes down, one level at a time. Fatima Al Qadiri starts on the dance floors of West Asia, Notzing goes back inside Zona, Dino Sabatini & Luigi Tozzi slow the room to a shaman's pace, and Munda ends in the hum of an old textile mill in the Pyrenees. Four picks: listen to them in that order. The label in focus is Northern Electronics, the Stockholm label that grew like a family, and the deep cut comes from inside it: Isorinne's Echoic Memoir, the score to a film that was never made.

Dino Sabatini & Luigi Tozzi XAMAN

XAMAN was never planned: it grew slowly, through listening and exchange, into a language Dino Sabatini and Luigi Tozzi now share, and this album is the first time it speaks. Crossing opens it: dark and wide, dub echoes drifting off the walls, the low end laid down as a floor for everything else. Sounds surface, dissolve and come back changed. It never moves forward, only deeper: XAMAN reads as shaman, and it works like one.

Fatima Al Qadiri 3TWI

3twi is Kuwaiti femme slang for a dirty old man, literally a male alley cat. Across four club tracks rooted in the region, Fatima Al Qadiri looks through his sleazy, faintly pitiful eyes: a playful, queer homage to West Asian folk dance, bent through deconstructed bass. Lama3an and Bobo Secret tease in spoken word, Gumar sings with open longing; one song moves into a Farsi dialect. Ta3alay ends on a cartoon theme sung twice over. Strange, funny, tender.

Munda Delia

Delia comes from the Greek for “to reveal”, and Munda takes it literally. At Konvent, in the Catalan Pyrenees, a building that once housed a textile mill, Selu Herraiz recorded what the walls still hold: glass, rusted iron, a battered Electone with broken keys. Horizonte Líquido closes the record: seven and a half minutes of drone and field recording, the organ unsteady, the building resonating beneath it. It makes you want the three pieces before it.

Notzing Zona

Notzing goes back into Zona, the 2021 EP, and rebuilds it from the inside for Kabalion. Monolith stands exactly as named: a black slab of kick and sub, fog rolling around its edges, a pulse that never raises its voice. Floraoxide grows in the damp beneath it, metallic and slow, spores of melody rusting as they open. Play it late, when the floor turns inward and starts to listen.

Isorinne Echoic Memoir

Some sounds stay with us only seconds; others linger in the rooms we return to in dreams. On Echoic Memoir, Isorinne turns that fleeting trace into melodic, nostalgic electronics, moving between Nordic ambient and intermittent rhythmic patterns. Released on Northern Electronics in 2016, Michel Isorinne’s album feels like the score to a dystopian film that was never made, its fragile melodies dissolving between memory and oblivion.

Label in focus

Northern Electronics

Northern Electronics began in Stockholm in 2013, set up by Abdulla Rashim as a label for friends, with dance music in mind. The first release went another way: Varg had been asked for a demo EP, turned up six months late, and Misantropen came out as an album Rashim feared was too ambient. Varg ended up running the label alongside him; Rashim also records under his own name, Anthony Linell.

Techno is the way in. Past it, the records drift into industrial grind, noise and long ambient fog, cold enough to earn the name.

It grew like a family: friends only, close to home, no demos, no big-name remixes. Around the two came Acronym, Korridor, Isorinne, Evigt Mörker, Rune Bagge, E-Saggila and SHXCXCHCXSH, while Rashim and Varg kept playing together as Ulwhednar. The Scandinavian Swords compilations, started in 2015, gather the circle in one place.

Start with Scandinavian Swords, then follow the names north.
