How we choose

below the threshold

Everything on Elettronica Concreta is picked by hand: every record, every night, every note, one at a time.

Where we look

Every day we go through what labels, artists and venues put out: their own pages and newsletters, the programmes of the rooms we follow, and what people send us. From all of it, we keep what sits below the threshold.

What gets in

It isn't a genre. It's a level. A record gets in when at least two of these hold:

  • Texture before melody. Noise, saturation, sub, grain, the tail of a reverb.
  • Repetition. Drones, long loops, music that takes its time.
  • Space. Empty rooms, northern and industrial landscapes, hauntology.
  • A small circuit. Micro-labels, limited runs, tapes and 12"s, little promotion.
  • An imaginary. Ritual, archive, memory.

Every record page says which ones it meets, under Why it's here. The borders stay open.

A night gets in when it brings an artist or a label we follow to a room in Italy or across Europe.

From announcement to review

  • Announcement: the record is out, or coming, and worth knowing about.
  • Pick: we've listened, and we stand behind it.
  • Signal: a single track that stopped us, with a few lines on why.
  • Deep cut: an older record, pulled from the archive.
  • Review: the long version.

Everything is signed by the masthead, Elettronica Concreta.
