Italian labels for experimental and dark electronic music

Italy has no single centre for this music, but it has a handful of independent labels with a clear line and a long catalogue. These are the ones we follow, from ambient to techno.

Glacial Movements

Glacial Movements was founded in Rome in 2006 by Alessandro Tedeschi, who records as Netherworld. It is dedicated to isolationist ambient inspired by Arctic landscapes, and its catalogue includes Loscil, Murcof, Machinefabriek, Rapoon, Scanner and bvdub.

Boring Machines

Boring Machines was founded in 2006 by Onga, in Veneto. Its line runs through drone, long meditations, psychedelia and experimental music, with a focus on independent Italian artists; every release is hand-assembled in recycled paper. It is one of the homes of Italian occult psychedelia.

Yerevan Tapes

Yerevan Tapes is a label from Bologna that releases dark and esoteric music on cassette and vinyl, from occult psychedelia to experimental and ritual sounds.

NO=FI Recordings

NO=FI Recordings is an independent label from Rome releasing vinyl and tapes, behind The Thalassa Tapes, a compilation of Italian occult psychedelia.

Spazio Disponibile

Spazio Disponibile was founded in Rome in 2016 by Donato Dozzy and Neel. Guest artists come to their studio to make records, from techno to experimental electronics: the catalogue includes Mike Parker, Kangding Ray, Marco Shuttle and Grand River. A sub-label, Spazio Nero, is dedicated to techno for the dancefloor.

Mental Modern

Mental Modern is a techno label from Rome built around essential, hypnotic sounds, where techno meets ambient, deep, dub and tribal. It works with international and emerging artists, among them Luigi Tozzi, and is distributed by TripleVision.

Mannequin

Mannequin was founded in Rome in 2008 by the producer Alessandro Adriani, with Carlo Cassaro, and is now based in Berlin. It began by reissuing rare European minimal synth, post-punk and industrial records, starting with the compilation Danza Meccanica – Italian Synth Wave 1982–1987, and now also releases new music between industrial, electronic body music and techno.
