Deep techno
Deep techno: the side of techno that works through repetition, space and detail. Dub and ambient techno, minimal and hypnotic, the Detroit lineage and electro, raw and mutant, mostly from independent labels. Sound design counts more than drops.
The lineage starts in Detroit with Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Underground Resistance, and with the electro of Drexciya, and runs through Berlin, where Basic Channel and Chain Reaction turned techno into dub. Alongside them: the minimal of Robert Hood, the ambient techno of Gas, and the hypnotic techno of labels like Prologue and Semantica. Italy has a strong voice here, from Donato Dozzy and Neel's Voices from the Lake to a younger generation of deep, hypnotic producers such as Claudio PRC and Luigi Tozzi.
We file here techno that works through repetition, space and detail rather than impact: dub and ambient techno, minimal and hypnotic, the Detroit sound and electro, and the rawer, mutant side when it stays deep. When the kick is saturated and the texture turns metallic, the record usually goes under Industrial techno & EBM.
